The Greater Alliance Carnation Festival Board is excited to announce the keynote speaker for the Greater Alliance Carnation Festival Community Luncheon will be Mr. Mike Lamborn, great-great nephew to Dr. Levi Lamborn.
Dr. Levi Lamborn was a politician, physician, and horticulturist born in Pennsylvania and then later moving to Alliance, Ohio to set up his medical practice. A serious student of horticulture specially dealing with carnations he grew some of the first carnations in the United States.
Before a political debate against William McKinley in 1876, Dr Lamborn presented him with a red carnation which McKinley wore and adopted as a good luck token. Instrumental in locating Dr. Lamborn’s great-great nephew Mike Lamborn, was Alliance Board of Education member Mr. Bill Koch, a self proclaimed collector of all things Alliance, Koch found a picture at his home and donated it to the Mabel Hartzell Historical Home and approached the festival board.
